#4  – Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917–1982). American jazz pianist and composer. Albums include: Genius of Modern Music Vols I & 2 (1947–52), Brilliant Corners (1956) and Straight, No Chaser (1967).

Considered one of the all time greats of American music, Monk is the second-most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. He had an unusual technique which involved the use of silences and hesitations. I wanted to use this idea of space in the typography. After exploring various ideas I extended the letterforms and kept them white to suggest the spaces.
